# Edit an automation (/docs/edit-automation)



Open the rule, change what you need, then Save. Save stays off until the form is dirty so you do not write a fake update.

## Open Edit [#open-edit]

    Go to Automations and open the rule.

    Choose Edit, or Edit automation from the aside.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    Change the name, Active from, Active to, keywords, Send DM to all comments, public reply phrases (post and Reel only), DM content, Required Follower, or lead capture fields your plan allows.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    Choose Save. While it runs, the button reads Saving… A toast says Changes saved.
  </Step>

If nothing changed, Save stays disabled. If a request still has no diff, the API returns No changes to save.

## What you can change after it is live [#what-you-can-change-after-it-is-live]

* **Name** (required, max 120).
* **Active from** and **Active to**. Leave both blank for Always on.
* **Keywords** or **Send DM to all comments**. There is no match-mode picker. See [Keywords and triggers](/docs/keywords-and-triggers).
* **DM content**: switch Use template vs Inline message, or change the inline offer.
* **Public reply** phrases on post and Reel rules. Story and live stay Direct only.
* **Only DM people who follow you**.
* **Name, Email, Phone** lead toggles on Growth and up.

On and Paused live on the same screen and on the view page. That switch is not a Save. See [Pause and delete](/docs/pause-delete).

## Overlap on save [#overlap-on-save]

If a keyword is already used by a sibling rule on the same post, the same live account, or another all-stories window, Save fails on the Keywords field. Example: Keyword "link" is already used by another automation on this post.
